My Intentions for EPQ

Welcome to my blog, I am using this platform to achieve an EPQ. The project I have chosen is Portugal, Specifically my experience having a British childhood compared to a Portuguese childhood; A how to guide on how to emigrate abroad from a students perspective and my parents perspective relocating a family abroad. Somethings I want to look at in particular are the opportunities and barriers of living and making a living in an unknown country. My first step would be to research Portugal and explore what it will take.

For example:

  • comparisons between Portugal and England 
  • the requirements for being a Portuguese citizen 
  • housing prices comparing rural and urban 
  • local livelihoods

Work and unemployment in Portugal

Work in Portugal Working in Portugal is similar to having a job in England for example the shifts in Portugal tend to be 9am till 6pm Mondays to Friday this is your average work week. “The current minimum wage in Portugal is €740.80 per month (£646), which works out at €8,889.60 per year (£7,750).” The minimum wage in Portugal is based on a salary per month calculation. In 2019, employees on minimum wage who are paid 12 times a year can expect an hourly salary of €4.38." Education and higher education in Portugal

Education and higher education in Portugal Some of the top universities in Portugal are University of Lisbon (which specialises in arts and design, mining engineering and geography), Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (which specialises in FAME finance, accounting, management and economics), University of Coimbra (which specialise in STEM science, technology, engineering and maths as well as arts and humanities.) Most courses – especially at bachelor’s level are taught in Portuguese. At graduate level, it’s more common to find English-taught programs, but it’s still definitely an asset to be able to speak the national language. In Portugal you can not rely on everyone being able to speak or understand English.
