Brexit and it's hindrances for moving abroad

What is Brexit?

On 23 June 2016, the UK held a referendum to answer the question: "Should the UK remain a member of the EU, or leave the EU?" (By a margin of 51.9 per cent to 48.1 per cent,) the UK voted to leave the European Union, commonly referred to as 'Brexit'. ‘Brexit’ is the name given to the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union. It is a combination of ‘Britain’ and ‘exit’.

Reliability: the government website of the Netherlands. Is fact checked and links to the source of information mostly done by the civil service are on the website.

Since Brexit UK citizens are no longer EU citizens. In the past while the UK was in the EU, UK citizens had an automatic right to travel and live in Portugal (or any other EU country). There’s now no longer an automatic right and, it seems, that UK citizens will be treated the same as any other 3rd country /non-EU citizen (e.g. those from the US, India, Brazil or Australia, etc).

That doesn’t mean that you can’t move to Portugal anymore. It just means that now you don’t have an automatic right and you will need to apply for a residency visa, attend an interview with SEF, and obtain permission to live in Portugal.

Reliability: The guide book will have had to go through the process of publishing and the facts have been checked.
