based languages however according to https://iwillteachyoualanguage.com/learn/spanish/spanish-tips/spanish-or-portuguese Spanish
is an easier language to learn this is due to the mass population of Spain (400
million) compared to Portugal (200 million) as well as Portuguese having 9 vowels.
It is said that if a Spanish speaker went to Portugal without looking at the
language they will understand at least 45% of what the Portuguese where saying

With about 260 million speakers worldwide, Portuguese is the sixth most spoken language in the world, the most spoken language in the Southern Hemisphere and the second most spoken romance language after Spanish.
Like Spanish, Portuguese is not difficult for native English speakers to learn. The grammar and sentence structure in Portuguese do differ significantly from English, but are arguably simpler to pick up. Because English and Portuguese both have Latin roots, vocabularies in both languages have a high number of similar words.
